Bamboo Beyond Basics

To invite designers, architects, artisans, and innovators to develop new, scalable bamboo-based products or systems that move beyond ladders and basic farm use. The aim is to create value-added products that can be made in rural workshops using local skills — leading to sustainable employment and rural entrepreneurship

Design Brief

Employment Generation
  • Product must be feasible to produce by rural youth or SHGs with basic tools and training
  • Potential for setting up micro-units or clusters
Utility & Appeal
  • Could be for rural or urban consumers (e.g., furniture, storage, agri-tools, play structures, garden items)
  • Design must consider aesthetics, safety, ease of transport
Deliverables
  • Product concept sketches or 3D views
  • Manufacturing process outline
  • Tools required and skill level
  • Cost estimation and selling price
  • ​Employment potential per unit setup
Success Metrics
  • Cost of setup < ₹25,000 for one unit
  • Job potential: 2–5 persons per cluster​​
  • Scalable and replicable model
  • Local pride in product creation
Value Addition
  • Must significantly increase bamboo’s economic value per unit weight
  • Move beyond traditional or underpriced applications (e.g., ladders)
Material-Sensitive Design
  • Use raw or treated bamboo creatively
  • Can be combined with jute, coir, mud, or other rural-friendly materials
Inspiration Areas (open to more)
  • Micro Bamboo Furniture Line for village homes, schools, or outdoor cafés
  • Foldable Farm Shelters or mobile shade units
  • Children’s Play Kits or Learning Aids
  • Urban balcony garden units made from bamboo
  • Livelihood kits (e.g., for broom-making, candle holders, or baskets)
  • Bamboo solar lamp stands or mounts

Terms and conditions

1. Eligibility:
  • The contest is open to all. (Individual or team)

  • Each individual or team can submit only one design.

2. Submission Requirements:
  • Design Brief (PDF): Explain materials used, cost per unit, intended produce type, and innovation rationale.

  • Prototype or Visuals: Slides, Photos, diagrams, 3D renders, or sample packaging

  • Sustainability Note: Highlight how your design reduces plastic use or improves recyclability.

  • Costing Sheet: Breakdown of approximate production and implementation cost.

  • Optional: - Video demonstration or field test results (if available)​​​​​

3. Video Submission
  • Shortlisted entries (to be announced on 20th July) must submit a 90-second video presentation explaining their design. The video should be in MP4 format with a 16:9 aspect ratio, 24 frames per second.

  • Language for video should be Marathi or English (Marathi subtitles in case of English audio and vice versa).

4. Open Access through Creative Comments:
  • All designs submitted as part of the KISAN Design Quest will be made available under a Creative Comments license, allowing them to be freely shared, adapted, and used by the farming community.

  • This approach ensures that your ideas can create real impact on the ground — helping farmers, makers, and innovators build upon them — while credit is always given to the original creators.

  • By participating, you agree to share your design under this license, contributing to an open-source movement for rural innovation.

5. General Terms:
  • The organisers reserve the right to modify or cancel the contest at any time. 

  • Any form of plagiarism will lead to disqualification.

  • The judges’ decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

  • By participating, contestants agree to these terms and conditions.
